Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Hyannis and South Yarmouth

If you're bringing your dog to the Cape, the first question is usually "Can we take them to the beach?" The honest answer is: it depends on the date. Both towns where our cottages sit, Barnstable (which includes Hyannis) and Yarmouth, keep dogs off town beaches during the busy summer season and welcome leashed dogs the rest of the year. Here's what we've confirmed from each town's published rules, plus where we'd take our own dog when the beaches are closed to them.

The short version

  • Hyannis / Town of Barnstable: No dogs on any town beach or recreation area, including the parking lots, from May 15 through September 15. Dogs must be leashed year-round.
  • South Yarmouth / Town of Yarmouth: No dogs on most town beaches, including Parker's River Beach, from May 15 through Labor Day. Seagull Beach and Gray's Beach (Bass Hole) close to dogs earlier, on April 1. Dogs must be leashed at all times.
  • Off-season (fall, winter, early spring): Leashed dogs are allowed on town beaches in both towns, as long as you pick up after them.

Rules can change, and wildlife closures (like nesting piping plovers) can close stretches of sand at any time. Always check the signs at the entrance before you head down.

Hyannis and the Town of Barnstable

Hyannis is one of seven villages in the Town of Barnstable, so Barnstable's rules cover Kalmus Beach, Keyes Beach (also called Sea Street Beach), Veterans Beach and Craigville. Under the town's dog regulations, dogs aren't allowed on any town beach or recreation area from May 15 to September 15, and that includes the beach parking lots, so leaving the dog in the car in the lot isn't an option either.

Outside those dates, leashed dogs are welcome. Barnstable requires leashes year-round everywhere in town, and asks owners not to leave bagged waste on beaches, in lots or at recreation areas. Carry it out with you.

Sandy Neck in West Barnstable, about a 20-minute drive from our Hyannis cottages, is a special case. The bathing beach follows the same May 15–September 15 dog ban, but leashed dogs are allowed on the Sandy Neck hiking trails all year. Some high-wildlife areas are posted "No Dogs Allowed," so watch for signs.

South Yarmouth and the Town of Yarmouth

Yarmouth's park and beach rules prohibit dogs on Seagull Beach and Gray's Beach starting April 1, and on all other town beaches from May 15 through Labor Day. That includes Parker's River Beach, the beach closest to our Beach Hut, plus Sea View, South Middle, Bass River (Smugglers) and Windmill beaches. Dogs are also not allowed on public boardwalks or at parks with playing fields.

After Labor Day, leashed dogs can come back to most Yarmouth beaches until May 14 (Seagull and Gray's until March 31). Yarmouth requires dogs to be leashed at all times, owners to clean up right away, and the town's rules list fines for violations.

Where to take your dog in summer instead

Summer on the Cape with a dog is still great; it just looks a little different.

  • Yarmouth Dog Park at the Sandy Pond Recreation Area, 474 Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth, is a short drive from both of our locations.
  • Barnstable Dog Park, at 1431 Phinney's Lane next to Hathaway's Pond, is a free, fenced park with a small-dog area, a training area and a mixed-use area. It's open dawn to dusk. The water bubblers are shut off in winter, so bring a bowl.
  • Sandy Neck trails stay open to leashed dogs year-round. Go early on hot days; the dunes get very warm.
  • Your own backyard. The Beach Hut has a fenced yard, and every Beach Please home has an outdoor shower, which is perfect for rinsing sandy paws after an off-season walk.

Our favorite off-season beach walks

Fall is our favorite time to be on the Cape with a dog. The crowds are gone, the water is still a little warm in September, and leashed dogs are welcome back on the sand.

  • Keyes Beach and Kalmus Beach in Hyannis: wide, easy walks with harbor and Nantucket Sound views, close to Blue Tide and Coral Coast cottages. (Barnstable beaches reopen to dogs after September 15.)
  • Parker's River Beach in South Yarmouth: an easy walk from the Beach Hut. It reopens to leashed dogs the day after Labor Day.
  • Sandy Neck: for a longer adventure, combine the trails and the beach once the summer season ends.

Beach etiquette that keeps beaches open to dogs

Off-season beach access exists because most dog owners follow the rules. A few habits help keep it that way:

  • Keep the leash on, even when the beach looks empty. Both towns require it.
  • Pick up and carry waste out, bag and all.
  • Give shorebirds and posted nesting areas plenty of room.
  • Rinse off salt and sand before heading inside; that's what the outdoor shower is for.
